Nora Fok is an artist who expresses her ideas in a very personal and quite distinctive way. She has the ability to translate her ideas into delightfully delicate and intricate compositions. She is intrigued by the world around her and is fascinated by different aspects of nature, structure, systems, and order, and the mysteries of magic. Her work is often quite complicated, using only basic tools and hand processes to draw attention to the intricate details found in her pieces. She turns the ordinary into extraordinary.

The artist has established herself as a pioneering maker, crafting her delicate, intricate forms from nylon microfilament. Nora makes her work by hand using techniques she has taught herself: knitting, knotting, tying, weaving, plaiting.
The list is deceptively simple; her chosen material of nylon monofilament is fine and hard to work but her results are spectacular. These pieces are often very complicated and take many hours, days or weeks to produce.

Marker Sketches -
Studies for paintings 2002 - 2003
by Rodney Alan Greenblat

These works were created between June of 2002 and March of 2003. They were created as experiments in color and pictorial style, and also as exercises in spontaneous drawing. The marker medium allows rapid changes and a free flow of line and color. The imagery that emerges is a vocabulary of elements and forms, some of these are recognizable, while others are abstract. The feeling the drawings convey range from high energy wonder to playful wandering, and the world that is portrayed is one of constant change. Forms that spin and loop, strange animals, roadways, gardens, board game pathways are all element to be found here. These drawing form the basis for a new series of paintings and sculpture currently under development by the artist.

Artist's Statement

I was trying to deconstruct and re-configure some of my previous imagery, and I wanted to do that in a very spontaneous way. I discovered a box of graphic art markers and realized how quickly I could build a dreamscape, and pass though images and islands of thought. The watercolor paper gave them a vividness and texture that is not usually associated with markers. The series is a success in that it has allowed be to branch out and find an open language of pictorial representation, and led me to my current body of work. Although I consider them sketches or studies for other works, I think these drawing are really part of a transition. They have allowed me to surprise myself, which I think is one of the joys of being an artist.

Here is an illustrator I have loved since I was at uni 15 years ago - Sophie Fatus! I used to have her postcards up on my wall and her painted handmade paper illustrations really inspired me.  Now one of my daughters favourite books 'Here we go round the mulberry bush' happens to be illustrated by her!  What goes around eh?!  Take a peek...

I have been reading some new books to my daughter Daisy and just adore the beautiful illustrations by Sophie Tilley in the Princess Evie's Ponies collection (written by Saran KilBride), so inevitably I googled her and Oh! the rest of her stuff is divine!  The colours are soft and candylike and they combine beautiful, whimsical, funky, quirky imagery with stacks of personality!   My absolute favourites are her litle girls, princesses and fairies... they are stunning!  They are so cool and contemporary and there is someone for each little girl (and big girl!) to relate to!!!
I like to think this would be me in the middle!!!

Olaf Hajek is one of the world’s most successful illustrators. His colorful work is infused with a folkloristic naivety and freshness and can be seen in publications such as The New York Times, in advertisements for companies such as Bacardi and even on postage stamps. Despite the diversity of his clientele, Hajek makes no aesthetic compromises. His characteristic style of “magic realism” is what makes his work appealing to a broad audience and range of clients. Flowerhead is Olaf Hajek’s first monograph. It presents an extensive collection of his commercial work as well as personal art that he created exclusively for his book....

..."My art is a reflection of my relationship with natural forms. It is often the metamorphosis of Nature's forms, as they change from season to season, that attracts me to that universal world in which differing life forms share similar qualities"... Alice B. Ballard

Love it! Just random gatherings woven together....
..."I spend my time amazed by nature. I weave original one-of-a-kind vessels and assembled collages of multiple layers of weaving, stitching, tying, encaustic, and paint that work around the edges of traditional techniques. Most materials are hand gathered. A small listing includes, but is not limited to, seagrass roots, bull sea kelp, roots, beaver sticks, barks, willow and native grasses"... Shannon Weber
